SNOWMOBILING IN COOKE CITY/SILVER GATE/GARDINER

Location & Getting Here:

Extreme southcentral Montana on US Hwy 212. Nearest airport is Bozeman, 140 miles northwest on I-90, US Hwy 89 and Mammoth Cooke City Highway. Car access is through northern Yellowstone National Park. US Hwy 212, east of Cooke City, is closed in winter. Gardiner is on US Hwy 89 north of Yellowstone.
Gateway to Yellowstone and the spectacular Beartooth high country, Cooke City / Silver Gate enjoys perhaps the longest winter sports season in Montana. These friendly communities consist of "80 people, dogs, moose and an occasional bison." The makers of both Yamaha and Arctic Cat snowmobiles have chosen the area as a test site and promotional film location for their machines. Gardiner, located at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park, provides easy access to park trails.
 
  TRAILS:
Popular connecting trails are Daisy Pass Road, Lulu Pass Road, Round Lake and Henderson Mountain. The Cooke City trail system connects with 50 miles of groomed trails in Wyoming. All Yellowstone National Park roads except Mammoth to Cooke City and Canyon to Tower are open to snowmobiles.

Snowmobile sales, service and rentals, lodging and food are available in Cooke City. Call the Gardiner Ranger District for information on guided snowmobile tours.
